Good news as the US is to join Nigeria in the fight against Boko Haram, a senior American diplomat disclosed yesterday.
President Barack Obama is to send a team to Nigeria in the nearest future for the two leaders to discuss cooperation renewal, The Nation reports.
It should be noted that the US authorities and Goodluck Jonathan-led government had been in tense relationship, with problems having started last year. The counter-terrorism operations were marked by mutual accusations.
The US administration posed serious allegations regarding corruption and human rights abuses within the military in its anti-Boko Haram campaign.
However, after Muhammadu Buhari’s inauguration, also attended by the US Secretary of State, John Kerry, the situation is expected to change.
US diplomat Linda Thomas-Greenfield disclosed:
“With the new government, we are optimistic we can reset the relationship. We want to work with him and have expressed that to him.”
The official recalled that President Buhari had vowed “ to do everything possible to address the situation in terms of resources and staff” in order to enable effective battle against the bokoharam sect.
Thomas-Greenfield said that the American side was encouraged that Buhari’s first trips were to Niger and Chad, the closest allies of Nigeria and member of Multi-National Task Force, headed by newly appointed commander, Major-General Tukur Buratai.
The yesterday’s meeting between the Chadian president, Idriss Deby, and his Nigerian counterpart, Muhammadu Buhari, in N’Djamena was followed by a communiqué. The two leaders agreed on cooperation enhancement and called for more international support.
Blasts in Maiduguri and Yola
While President Buhari was abroad to consider the most effective ways of tackling Boko Haram, two separate attacks were launched in Borno state and Adamawa state capitals.
According to the recent update, Maiduguri blast at a military checkpoint killed eight soldiers. In Yola, 19 people reportedly died following the explosion in front of the market.
Both attacks were said to have been carried out by female suicide bombers.
Yola resident Salihu Aliyu told Premium Times:
“We just finished observing the Maghrib prayer when we heard a loud blast in the direction of the market… You know many traders also come out of the market and display their wares outside the main market to also observe the night market. There was even traffic gridlock in the area with many Keke Napep operators jostling for passengers when the bomb exploded.”
The official figures on casualties are yet to be provided.

Ekiti state Governnnor Ayodele Fayose forgives outgoing lawmaker bide them farewell
Ayodele Fayose the Ekiti State Governor, on Thursday bade farewell to the outgoing members of the House of Assembly, insisting that he had nothing against then and he has forgiven them for attempting to remove him from office.
Fayose said this in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, even as the Assembly’s tenure will expire on Friday.
Ekiti State had been under siege for the past three days as thugs said to be loyal to Fayose blocked all roads leading to the Assembly complex to prevent the 19 All Progressives Congress lawmakers from sitting with the aim of impeaching him.
Fayose lamented how things ended between him and the lawmakers but promised that they would not be victimised after leaving office.
He said, “The last few months have been traumatic, especially this week. I was not given room for concentration, but I had left the battle for God to fight. I told those planning to impeach me that they will succeed if they can impeach God.
“I did not bring myself back to power; my coming back after eight years was divine. I defeated the APC totally in all the elections, still they did not want to concede victory easily until when the Ekiti people rose to defend that June 21 mandate.
“I will now squarely face the business of governance.”
He explained that he would not waste time on revenge, noting that he was not ready to muscle anyone since God had given him victory in all of the battles that confronted him.
The governor, who praised the people of the state for preventing the lawmakers from gaining access to the complex, urged them to meet him at Ijigbo junction on Friday for a ‘victory walk’ to the complex where he will inaugurate the next Assembly which will comprise 26 members of the Peoples Democratic Party.
“The governor called on the people to gather at Ijigbo junction tomorrow ( Friday) from where he would lead them on victory walk to the state House of Assembly for the inauguration of the new House of Assembly members,” the statement added.
More tension as Senate presidenncy seat hot up APC prospone meeting till Saturday
Tension Over Senate Presidency rulling party APC has Postpones its Meeting Till Saturday.
According to sahara reporters The choice of Nigeria’s next Senate president may be creating a rift in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as a meeting scheduled for today between members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and the party’s newly elected legislators was postponed till Saturday.
One of the main contender Senator Bukola Saraki, The meeting, which was scheduled to decide on a single candidate for the position of Senate President, was to hold today at the International Conference Center in Abuja.
In a meeting a day ago with members of the party’s NWC, President Muhammad Buhari had signaled his preference for Senator Ahmed Lawan. Several sources at the meeting disclosed that Mr. Buhari said he was tipping Senator Lawan because of his experience and integrity. Mr. Lawan hails from Nigeria’s violence-ravaged northeast zone.
His presumed main rival is former Governor Bukola Saraki.
President Buhari had asked party leaders to present one candidate as a way of projecting a united front. However, SaharaReporters earlier reported that APC’s national chairman, Odigie Oyegun, was pushing for a primary to enable party members to choose between Saraki and Lawan. Some APC sources disclosed that Mr. Oyegun supports former Governor Saraki’s bid to emerge as the new Senate president.
Several supporters of Mr. Saraki told SaharaReporters that they suspect the abrupt cancellation of today’s meeting was a deliberate ploy by party leaders to enable the Lawan group to recruit more senators to their side.
Mr. Saraki and his backers are reportedly insisting that today’s meeting proceed as planned. “We are convinced that Distinguished Senator Saraki has a majority of support in the APC. And he will also draw support from PDP senators,” an ally of Mr. Saraki told SaharaReporters on condition of anonymity. The PDP is not presenting a candidate for the Senate presidency.
An APC leader told SaharaReporters that the National Assembly’s plenary session, slated for today, had made it impossible for the party’s meeting to hold as planned. “That’s why we changed the date to Saturday,” he said.
The Senate is expected to convene and elect a president on Saturday.
wonders shall never end as two girls raped by six gang members
Wonders shall never end as two sisters, Essiet, 18, and 20-year-old Debby (not real names), have been raped by a gang of six men who accosted them in the Bariga area of Lagos State.
According to PUNCH Metro the victims were returning from a hospital in the Oworonsoki area last Thursday when they were attacked by the suspects.
It was learnt that while Essiet was deflowered by four men, her elder sister, Debby, was ravished by two of the hoodlums.
When PUNCHMetro visited the scene of the incident on Ogundero/ Dahomey streets on Wednesday, the people in the area said they were not aware.
Some of those who spoke said they were not living in the area, but only ran their trade on the streets.
However, punch correspondents learnt from a source that the matter was reported at the Bariga Police Station and two of the suspects had been arrested.
PUNCH Metro also spoke with Essiet who described her experience as a nightmare.
In her word “It happened on May 21 around 11pm. My sister and I went to give food to a family member who had just given birth to a baby in Oworonsoki.
“We were returning in the night when we saw the men. They had guns, cutlasses and other weapons.
“They stopped us and said if we shouted they would kill us. They took us to a spot around Dahomey junction and raped us.”
The second victim, Debby, described the incident as painful.
She said she wanted the suspects punished and their accomplices, who were still at large, arrested.
She said, “Two of them raped me, while four raped my sister.
“The third man wanted to rape me when a car approached. They all took to their heels. It was a painful experience. I have taken different medications and visited the hospital as well.”
PUNCH Metro was told that a day after the act, one of the victims, while passing through the area, spotted one of the suspects.
She was said to have reported the matter to the police, who arrested the suspect.
Debby said, “We were able to recognise him because when they were raping us, he took my phone and also shouted at me to stop looking at him. We saw his face clearly.
“I just want them to go to jail for what they have done to us.”
However, the two suspects ─ Mayowa Adeniji (21), and Riliwan Oladapo (25) ─ said they knew nothing about the incident.
Adeniji, who claimed to be an artiste, said he was at a club in the Gbagada area when the police arrested him and Oladapo.
He said, “I am an artiste by profession and my stage name is D. Dot. I have released several albums that are being aired on radio stations. I have been doing music for the past 11 years and I have done collaborations with many artistes in this country.
“Though I am a street guy, I know what I am doing. On the day the police came to arrest me, I was having fun with my back-up artiste and there were five girls at my beck and call.
“I didn’t know why they came to arrest me until I got to the station and saw these small girls saying we raped them.
“I have never met them in my life and I don’t know what they are talking about.”
Oladapo, on his part, said he was only a victim of circumstances.
A family member of the victims, Christopher Iheme, said relatives of the suspects had been begging them to let go of the matter.
He, however, insisted that the family wanted justice.
“We have spent a lot of money on their treatment. But that is not the issue.
“It is painful for us because the 18-year-old was deflowered by the gang.
“We are worried that her elder sister might be pregnant. But we will take her to the hospital for a checkup.
“The families of the two suspects have been begging and asking us to name our price. But we want them punished to serve as a deterrence to others like them,” he said.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident.
He said, “We have arrested the suspects and transferred them to the Department of Criminal Investigation, Panti, Yaba.
“I am also aware that the detectives have taken the suspects to court.”
Senator elect Buruji Kashamu granted life line by a federal high court
Senator elect Buruji kashamu have been granted a life line by A Federal High Court in Lagos which has asked the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to suspend all actions on the move to extradite the Ogun East Senator-elect, Mr. Buruji Kashamu, to the United States to face trial on alleged drug-trafficking offences.
The presiding judge, Justice Ibrahim Buba, while adjourning hearing in all pending applications on the subject matter till June 19, said on Thursday that status quo must be maintained till all the applications were decided one way or the other.
Pending before Buba is the committal suit filed by Kashamu against the Attorney General of the Federation and the Chairman of NDLEA, citing them for contempt of court.
In response, the NDLEA has filed preliminary objection challenging the jurisdiction of the court to entertain the matter.
Besides, the anti-narcotic agency is seeking the reversal of the court order of May 26 which directed it to withdraw more than 50 of his operatives which had laid siege to Kashamu’s house.
At the resumed proceedings on Thursday where the AGF, NDLEA Chairman and Kashamu himself were expected before the court, the NDLEA lawyer, A. M. Sunday, said the agency had yet to be served with the originating processes in Kashamu’s committal suit.
Sunday said all that the agency received was the court’s order of May 26 directing it to withdraw its armed operatives from Kashamu’s Lagos residence.
The lawyer, however, said the NDLEA had filed a motion seeking to set aside the court order, adding that the jurisdiction of the court was also being challenged.
However, Kashamu’s lawyer, Mr. R.A. Oluyede, in opposition to NDLEA, said the agency’s motion had no relevance, saying it had been overtaken by events.
Oluyede urged the judge to make additional orders to prevent NDLEA from overreaching the court.
He urged the court to nullify any warrant of arrest that might have been obtained through any source in an attempt to extradite Kashamu.
He urged the court to declare the fresh move by the respondents to commence extradition proceedings against him in the face of the existing judgment of the court restraining them from doing so.
He also sought a court order directing the Inspector General of Police to provide security for Kashamu to prevent the respondents from making any attempt on his life.
But Buba, in a bench ruling, declined granting any of the newly sought orders but ordered all the parties not to take any action capable of undermining the processes before the court.
The judge said he would have to adjourn further hearing to allow the service of court papers on all the parties.
He held, “The matter before the court is that of committal and challenge to jurisdiction. I shall adjourn for the hearing of the applications on its merits.”
The matter was adjourned till June 19, for the hearing of all pending applications.
